Addition of Former Amazon.com Head of Business Intelligence Further Strengthens Greenplum's Leadership in the BI Marketplace
San Mateo, Calif. -- (May 30, 2006) -- Greenplum, the leading provider of enterprise PostgreSQL for Business Intelligence (BI), announced today that it has hired Mark Dunlap, a widely-known data warehousing pioneer and former director of business intelligence at Amazon.com. Dunlap joins Greenplum as vice president of business intelligence and will help define next generation BI solutions that make innovative use of Greenplum's database products. Dunlap will also lead Greenplum's System Engineering Group, which is responsible for working directly with customers and prospects to deploy Greenplum solutions around the world.
"Mark has an impressive track record building world-class business intelligence environments," said Gary Butler, vice president of worldwide field operations for Greenplum. "He has very deep knowledge of the performance and operational challenges faced by the market, and a thorough understanding of the importance of delivering significant and measurable business value to customers. Existing and future customers will benefit from Mark's vast experience."
At Amazon.com, Dunlap and his team architected the site's world-class BI infrastructure. In this role, he was responsible for all aspects of the Amazon.com enterprise data warehouse-including operating and maintaining the world's largest Linux-based data warehouse and supporting users across five countries. Under Dunlap's guidance, the Amazon.com data warehouse received industry acclaim, winning Oracle's "Data Warehouse of the Year" award in 2004, and the Winter Group's Award for "Top Linux-based Data Warehouse" in 2005.
"Amazon.com is a data-driven company, and my work there focused on leveraging commodity technologies to build an enterprise-wide data warehouse solution that managed over 70 terabytes of data," said Dunlap. "Greenplum's unique architecture and open source approach makes large-scale data warehousing available to organizations of all sizes. I look forward to working with the team to help companies use open source solutions to improve their decision making."
Prior to Amazon.com, Dunlap was one of the founding members of Informix Software's Advanced Technology Group and was responsible for the Solution Center based in Englewood, Colorado.
